Woods Furniture: A Journey Through Time
Established in 1875, Woods Furniture is one of the largest independent furniture stores in the Southwest of England. Here, you can read more about our long and distinguished past.
The 1900s
Woods Domestic Stores were established in 1875 at 48 High East Street, Dorchester. By 1907, Woods had expanded to 35 High East Street where we still trade today. This new store sold furniture, flooring, and curtains, while the original Domestic Store had a more extensive collection of varied homeware supplies. In the 1980s, we sold number 48 and expanded number 35 to also include 34 High East Street. It was then that we became a member of the Association of Independent Stores (AIS). Being a member of AIS is what allows us to compete with big chains when it comes to product range, service, and price.
The 2010s
Thanks to our ethos of constantly improving ourselves, in 2011, the store underwent a major refurbishment, bringing the business right up to date and stocking leading names like Ercol, Stressless, GPlan, and Harrison to name but a few.
In addition to our showroom in High East Street, our Woods at Brewery Square store opened in November 2016. This new, contemporary showroom offers wall-to-wall stunning furniture and beautiful home accessories, taking us back to our roots while maintaining the quality and range of choice that you have come to associate with the Woods name.
Today
Now Woods Furniture boasts 10,000 square feet over four floors, located right in the heart of Dorset’s County Town, with free customer parking at the rear.
To reach as many people as possible, we have successfully expanded to include ecommerce as part of our small business. This means that you can receive the Woods standard no matter where in the country you live, or you can look around one of our stores and then go home and have a think and then shop later. Online shopping just provides you with that extra level of flexibility.
