Finding The Best Mattress For You

Say goodnight to bad sleep

Shop our mattresses now

Getting a good night is never easy if you don’t have the best bed. A good sleep can only come from the perfect mattress, but do you actually know what that is? Well, you’re not alone! Most Britons haven’t changed their mattress in the last ten years and nearly half of us wake up with aches and pains from having either the wrong type of mattress or one that’s just too old. So, what can we do to change that?

The wrong mattress can cause problems particularly in the Lumbar spine

Flip your mattress regularly to distribute signs of wear to each side, helping it to last longer

Using a mattress topper or protector, as well as regularly flipping your mattress, will help to prolong its life but it will still need replacing every few years and needs to be the right one for your weight and sleeping style. Navigating this, however, can be a minefield, which is why we have collated a chart to help work out what each mattress grade could mean for you. Alternatively, if you work better with pictures than words and numbers, our in-store display might help to demonstrate the chart visually.

As always, there are exceptions to these rules.

Of course, many people change position throughout the night, in which case the most common position should be the one taken into account, or the position in which you most often wake up. Other factors - like aforementioned aches and pains to the hips and lower back, as well as personal preference - can influence which type of mattress is best for you. If you’re not sure what your preference is, think back to the last time you stayed in a hotel and how comfortable you were. As a reference, most hotels use medium to medium-firm level mattresses as they are the most commonly preferred option.

To discover your favourite type of mattress, it is recommended to spend 15 minutes testing each one for comfort. Why not pop down to our High East Street shop in Dorchester to check out our range of options?

Choosing Your Materials

Again, your sleeping position will affect which material is ideal for you. For example, innerspring mattresses are the traditional model, having been around since the early 1900s, but they aren’t as effective for side sleepers as they don’t contour around pressure points like memory foam, latex, and hybrid options are capable of. The advantages of innerspring mattresses are that they are springy and bouncy, and the more coils a mattress has, the higher quality it is likely to be. This does, however, increase the likelihood of squeaking throughout the night, particularly if you have a restless sleeping partner. It is therefore advisable to opt for a pocket-spring mattress as a more luxurious alternative. In this case, each individual spring moves independently of one another, making for a more comfortable and supportive night. Latex is good for contouring and pressure relief and offers a bouncy surface much like that of a spring, while offering a more environmentally friendly solution thanks to being a natural byproduct of tree sap. The latex options are particularly helpful for those who snore - or more so their partners! - as they offer great support to the head and neck, allowing free breathing and better posture.

Cool but comfy

In recent years, thanks to an invention by aerospace giants NASA, memory foam mattresses have seen an increase in popularity. This type of mattress is great for spine alignment and cushioning, though some people are reluctant to move in that direction not only because of an aversion to softness but also because of temperature. Obviously, the more you can sink into the bed, the hotter it’s going to be, but these Emma mattresses say otherwise! The award-winning mattresses have temperature control systems so there is no need to worry on this front. The ingenious team at Emma have used the high thermal conductivity material of graphite to infuse the foam inside their mattresses, bringing down your body temperature quickly and efficiently for a cool night of deep sleep, regardless of the temperature outside!
